# KPI Updates Explained: Live Signals and Advanced TWAICE KPIs

### Introduction: Type of KPIs in TWAICE BESS Analytics

TWAICE is an advanced analytics software built specifically for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). Modern BESS generate billions of data points every day, but tools like the Battery Management System (BMS) or Energy Management System (EMS) only show part of the picture.

TWAICE consolidates all battery data into one platform, applies battery-specific intelligence, and translates it into actionable insights. By continuously monitoring and updating KPIs, TWAICE ensures transparency, reliability, and efficiency - enabling safer operations, higher performance, and improved profitability so you don’t have to switch between multiple vendor tools.

When it comes to Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), TWAICE provides two categories of insights:

- **Live Signals:** Live signals derived directly from BMS sensor data (e.g., voltage, current, power, energy, & temperature, BMS alert data).
- **Specialized TWAICE-calculated KPIs:** Derived using advanced algorithms and models (e.g., availability, usable energy and DC resistance). These cannot be measured directly but are critical for understanding safety, performance, and health.

In this article, we explain the types of KPIs in TWAICE, how often they are updated, and where you can see both live signals (near real-time) and TWAICE-calculated KPIs within the platform.

### Time Zones

TWAICE lets you control how timestamps are displayed across your portfolio, configured individually per user in **Account Settings**. Three display options are available:

- **Storage time:** Timestamps are displayed in the local timezone of each storage system. This is the default setting.
- **Browser time:** Timestamps follow the timezone of your browser.
- **A specific timezone:** Timestamps are displayed in a fixed timezone of your choice (for example, Coordinated Universal Time).

***Important:*** *Daily aggregations and recurring reports — including the daily TWAICE KPIs described later in this article — are always calculated in each system's **Storage time**, regardless of which display option you choose. This keeps daily summaries aligned with the actual operating day of each storage system.*

### Live Signals

TWAICE displays live signals streams directly from the BMS sensor data. These metrics **update continuously**, with an updating frequency down to raw data, depending on the data ingestion method.

### Data Update Considerations

- **Latency:** Updates depend on the data ingestion method. For example, API and SFTP ingestion may have sub-minute delays, while Pull Stack ingestion might involve batching and longer delays (e.g., ~20 minutes). (Latency from customer cloud to the TWAICE platform).
- **Processing delay:** TWAICE cleans, transforms and prepares incoming sensor data before showing it in the platform, therefore results in a short delay time (usually around 2 minutes).
- **Data Availability:** Customer data must first be ingested and available on the platform.

### Where You’ll Find Them

- **Hierarchy Diagram (Live Mode):** Tree view of the BESS structure showing live values (SoC, temperatures, active power, operating status).
- **Data Explorer**: Flexible visualization tool combining real-time and historical data for root cause analysis (TWAICE KPIs are updated as explained in the next section).
- **Smart Alerts:** Continuous monitoring of BMS signals to detect anomalies and trigger warnings (TWAICE KPIs are updated as explained in the next section).

### TWAICE-Calculated KPIs

While sensor data gives you the “raw signals,” TWAICE adds unique KPIs that go beyond what the system provides. These are derived from advanced algorithms that interpret how the system is aging, performing, or at risk in depth and provides actionable insights.

### Where You’ll Find Them

- **Health** (e.g., string SoH)
- **Performance** (e.g., temperature spreads, recoverable energy)
- **Penalty Risk** (e.g. TWAICE SoC)
- **Warranty** (e.g., system availability, system SoH)
- **Safety** (e.g., self-discharge detection)
- **Smart Alerts** (e.g., voltage spread threshold exceeded)
- **Data Explorer** (e.g. DCR)

### Calculation Process

TWAICE KPIs are the result of a carefully managed data process that turns raw data into advanced insights. The journey looks like this:

- **Raw Data:** Sent directly from your systems.
- **Clean Data:** Processed in our pipeline to validate, filter, and standardize the signals.
- **Calculated KPIs:** Transformed into advanced KPIs on performance, health, and safety.

By following this structured process, we make sure that every KPI in the platform reflects accurate, consistent, and meaningful information for managing your BESS.

### Update Frequency of TWAICE KPIs

As explained above, to calculate TWAICE KPIs, customer data must first be ingested and available on the platform. Once ingested, our system automatically recalculates KPIs in batches. Update frequency varies by metric: some KPIs are recalculated daily, others weekly. In all cases, **results reflect the most recently completed time period**, aligned with the defined granularity.

To give you more clarity on how and when TWAICE KPIs are calculated, here’s an overview of update frequency in the table below.

***Daily KPIs are defined as:*** *daily from 00:00:00 until 23:59:59.9999999, in each system's Storage time.*

***Example:*** *Voltage spread values are updated daily, before 08:00 Storage time, e.g. in the Imbalances feature.*
