TWAICE uses different component states in the platform: such as **Disconnected**, **Idle,** and **Missing Data,** to describe the real-world status of components.

In this article, we define each state, how TWAICE detects them, and highlight the differences.

### 🔍 Quick Summary of States

Here’s a quick overview of how TWAICE classifies component states before we go into the details:

| **State** | **Data available?** | **What it means** | **Key indicator** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Disconnected | Yes | Component is electrically isolated and cannot charge/discharge | Throughput \<5% of sibling |
| Idle | Yes | Component is healthy, but simply resting | Throughput = 0, no signs of malfunction |
| Missing data | No | Missing data points, platform cannot determine the component’s state | There is missing sensor data or can't calculate the KPI |

⬇️ Continue with the article to learn about the details below.

### 🔌 What is "Disconnected"?

A **disconnected** state is means the component (string or PCS module) is **electrically isolated** and therefore **cannot charge or discharge**, therefore **not** **actively contributing** to the system's **energy throughput.**

This can be also referred as "offline" or "non-operating" in the industry.

### How TWAICE identifies "disconnected"?

### **Disconnected PCS Module**

A PCS module is classified as disconnected when it is **electrically disconnected** from the DC combiner. This typically happens when the switch between the PCS and the DC combiner is open.

The PCS module is considered to be **disconnected**, if the **DC voltage** is either:

- Close to 0 V, or
- Shows a voltage difference to the DC Combiner more than 50 V,

### **Disconnected String**

A string is classified as **electrically disconnected** by analyzing its **energy throughput.**

A string is classified as **disconnected** if:

- Its **throughput is \< 5% of the sibling strings** in the same **DC combiner** while those sibling strings show considerable throughput.
- The **parent PCS** **module** is identified as **disconnected**.

👉🏻 You can **track** disconnected strings/ PCS in various features in TWAICE platform, such as **Hierarchy Diagram and Smart Alerts:**

### What causes disconnected strings?

This can occur due to various reasons, including:

- **Maintenance Activities:** Planned maintenance tasks like module replacements or system upgrades can temporarily take a string offline.
- **Control System Issues:** Malfunctions or misconfigurations in the control system can unintentionally deactivate a string.
- **Hardware Failures:** Faulty connections, damaged modules, or other hardware issues can prevent a string from operating.
- **Data Outages:** Temporary disruptions in data transmission can mask the true operational status of a string.

### What can you do about disconnected strings?

- **Check for Maintenance Activities:** Verify if any planned maintenance work, such as module replacements or system upgrades, is scheduled or underway.
- **Inspect Control System Settings:** Review the control system's configuration to ensure that the string is not intentionally deactivated or derated.
- **Examine Hardware Connections:** Visually inspect the string's connections for any loose or damaged cables. Use the TWAICE String DCR to identify an anomaly for this specific string.
- **Analyze Data Quality:** Review the data connection for the non-operating string to identify any potential data gaps or outages.

### 💤 What Is “Idle”?

An **idle** state means the system or component is **not charging or discharging**, but everything is **healthy** and **correctly connected**. There is no throughput, yet there are no signs of a malfunction.

### How TWAICE identifies "Idle"?

- Data is available
- Throughput = **0**
- No indicators of disconnection or hardware issues
- The system or component is **simply resting**

Idle states are normal and expected during periods with no operational demand.

👉🏻You can **track** idle components in **Hierarchy Diagram:**

### 🟡 What is "Missing Data"?

**Missing data** means the platform **does not have the necessary datapoints** to determine the component’s state or calculate KPIs for that time range. This may happen because:

- There is **missing raw sensor data**, that was not ingested (for example, missing current signal data in that time range)
- More rarely, the KPI could not be calculated even though some data was present.

The root cause **should be investigated** further, can get in touch with your TWAICE contact to learn more.
