### Understanding and Addressing High Temperature Alerts in Your Battery System

Experiencing high cell or module temperatures in your battery system can be concerning, but understanding the potential causes and taking prompt action can help ensure the safety and optimal performance of your BESS. At the same time, it supports the longevity of your BESS.

### What Causes High Cell or Module Temperatures?

**Overheated cables & connectors**: Loose connections, damaged insulation, undersized cables, or corrosion can cause temperature spikes at the cable or connection point, potentially spreading heat to the entire module.

**Uneven cell heating**: Higher resistance in some cells compared to others leads to uneven current distribution and increased heat generation (Joule heating, I^2\*R).

**Ineffective cooling system**: Faulty cooling equipment, blocked airflow, or incorrect temperature settings can lead to overall high temperatures within the BESS container.

**Suboptimal thermal management**: Inadequate thermal layout, insufficient passive cooling, or poor component placement can create localized hot spots within the container.

**Uneven power distribution**: Higher current and power demands on specific system components due to imbalances or other reasons can raise overall temperatures.

### What You Can Do:

**Visual inspection**: Address these issues by visually inspecting, measuring contact resistance, tightening connections, and verifying cable size.

**DCR analysis**: Investigate if there is a significantly higher DCR for the components showing a higher temperature, this could indicate connection issues or faulty components or cells. Use the TWAICE Health Analytics to identify strings with high DCR values and check in the "String over time view" how it compares with other strings and if there is a trend observable.

**Check cell or module temperatures**: Analyze individual cell or module temperatures and consider module replacement if necessary. Check if there is a trend observable that the temperature of components is rising steadily over a longer period. Use the TWAICE Health Analytics to identify high temperature spreads or TWAICE Warranty Tracker to identify maximum temperatures for different components. Using the TWAICE Data Explorer, a deep dive and comparison with other signals can be performed.

**Recurring components**: Monitor if it is the same or the same set of components which show these temperature alerts recurrently, then it might be a design problem or HVAC / cooling issue. Use the TWAICE Safety Monitoring & Analytics to search for different components to evaluate the number of times an alert is happening for certain components.

**HCAV and cooling configuration**: Ensure proper operation of fans, filters, and cooling units, clear airflow paths, and adjust temperature settings for optimal cooling. Evaluate thermal maps, consider airflow improvements, and optimize component placement for better heat dissipation. Use the TWAICE Health Analytics to identify high temperature spreads and where they are occurring to identify patterns. The upcoming TWAICE Performance Manager helps to identify temperature patterns.

**Power flows**: Analyze system power flows, check for faulty components in the power train, and implement control strategies for balanced current distribution. Use the TWAICE Data Explorer and compare the current and power which is flowing through different components to identify differences in absolute values.

### Remember!

Early detection and intervention are crucial to preventing damage to your battery system and ensuring its continued safe and reliable operation. By understanding the potential causes of high temperature alerts and taking appropriate action, you can maintain the health and performance of your battery investment.
